Every coin you pick up is at risk. Every coin you bank is safe. The temple knows the difference.

GREED is a short survivor-like. You run around a temple, your weapon fires on its own, and gold drops everywhere. The catch: the gold you're carrying isn't yours until you walk out with it, and the more you carry, the angrier the temple gets. A run takes a few minutes, and every one of them comes down to the same question.

Leave now with what you have, or risk it all for more?

Hi, I'm Csaba

I'm a small indie developer, and I love games. I always wanted to make one all by myself, so I did. GREED is that game, and this demo is the first time anyone besides me gets to play it.

It's early. Some things are rough and a few will break. I'd much rather hear about it than have you quietly close the tab, so hit FEEDBACK in the pause menu, or come tell me on Discord. I read everything.

In the demo

  • A thief's den you walk around between runs. Your hoard grows with whatever you manage to bank.
  • Runs through the temple's halls, each with its own look, light and creatures.
  • Deals: every 25 seconds the temple offers you cards. Each one is something good with a price attached. You can buy more of them from the Fence between runs.
  • The Crucible: melt two Deals into an Alloy, a card that does something neither could alone.
  • Six songs that get more frantic the greedier you get.

How to play

  • Move: WASD or the arrow keys. Aiming and shooting are automatic.
  • Pick a card: click it, or press the number on it.
  • Cash Out: a gold ring opens now and then. Stand in it until it fills to bank your pile. Die first and the pile is gone.
  • Pause: Esc. Run again from the result screen: R, Space or Enter.
  • In the den, between runs: walk up to a thing and press E.
  • Controller: stick or d-pad, A picks, B goes back, Start pauses, Y runs again.

System requirements

  • Browser: a current Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari with WebGL 2. About 45 MB to load the first time. The fullscreen button under the game gives the best picture.
  • Windows 10 or newer, 64-bit. Not signed: if SmartScreen complains, choose More info, then Run anyway.
  • macOS 11 or newer. Not signed: right-click the app and choose Open.
  • Linux, 64-bit, with OpenGL 3.3 or newer. Keep GREED.x86_64 and GREED.pck together.
  • A controller is optional.

How it's made

I write the code with help from an AI (Claude, by Anthropic), and I direct, review and test all of it. The art and sound come from tools I built for this game, a pixel-art one and a sound one, plus some free CC0 sound packs by Kenney. There are no AI-generated images, voices or music in the game.

Want more?

Leave your email on the GREED site and I'll tell you when there's news about the full game. One confirmation mail, nothing else, and you can unsubscribe whenever.

Or come and hang out on the Discord. Bugs, ideas and "how did you get that much gold" are all welcome.
